Accessibility - the measure of how usable a website is for people with visual, physical, neurological & various other disabilities. The obligation for commercial websites to provide such accessibility is now part of the Disability Discrimination Act.
Anti-Virus - software used to combat the infection of a computer by a malicious program (a virus) by automatically attempting to detect the virus before it can be installed on the computer. The Hosting Package includes an anti-virus service.
Auto Responder - an e-Mail function that automatically delivers a courtesy message to any visitors that send an e-Mail to a website. This is often used to confirm that the e-Mail has been successfully received. This function is available as an optional extra.
Catch-All e-Mail - a program that attempts to catch any e-Mail sent to a website with a spelling error or incomplete address.
Charitable Website - any organisation that is registered with the Charity Commision is automatically able to claim the charitable discount. Unregistered organisations will be considered for a smaller discount on an individual basis.
Custom Error Page - a website function that delivers a helpful webpage to site visitors when another page cannot be found or is incorrectly typed.
Digital Goods - computer files or software that may be sold. Music tracks (in MP3 format) & guidebooks (in PDF format) are an example.
Domain Name - the address typed to view a particular website, for example www sharpplum co uk.
Downloading - allowing your website visitors to copy a file (music, picture or text) from the website server onto their own computer.
E-Commerce - the taking of commercial or charitable payments online. This requires online banking facilities.
E-Mail Forwarding - an e-Mail function that sends a copy of any e-Mail sent to a website to a second e-Mail address. For example, an e-Mail sent to info@websitename co uk is also delivered to myname@btintenet co uk.
Global Domain - the extension found at the end of a website address that informs the visitor (& search engines) that the website has worldwide aspirations. For example .com & .org.
Hosting - before it can be viewed, a website needs to be hosted by being placed upon an internet server which will make the site available 24 hours a day.
Hosting Package - a service that allows a website to be placed onto an internet server for a fee. This allows the website to be viewed by sitevisitors.
Intellectual Property Rights - English law states that the author of internet content is by default the owner of that content. There are some exceptions to this situation.
Mailbox - a function vital for e-Mail. A mailbox is the holding space reserved for storing your e-Mails prior to viewing them.
Microsite - very small website with basic functions. Can be used to gain a foothold online for a small organisation or to showcase a product, service or promotion separate from the main website.
Sheltered Hosting - a service that provides everything your website needs to be published online, without any action being taken by the website owner.
SiteMap - a website function that allows the site visitor to see a list of all pages available on a website & access them. Because each page on a site is connected to a sitemap, this can greatly enhance compatability with search engines.
Site Proposal - the document sent by SharpPlum for your approval. It sets out the design project to be undertaken.
Site Traffic - the amount of visitors to your website.
Site Visitors - other people that choose to view pages on your website.
SSL - a high security function for webpages. Stands for Secure Sockets Layer. Needed if personal details are to be typed directly onto a webpage.
Spam - unrequested e-Mail marketing, often sent in high volumes. Can cause a problem for the recipient as recognising genuine e-Mails proves time consuming & costly.
Splash Page - a webpage used as a welcome mat to visitors. Used to impress an image or mood upon the visitor with selected photography & art. Once inaccessible to search engines, modern splash pages are now back in favour.
Submission To Search Engines - an alternative to waiting for a search engine to randomly find your site, is to apply directly for inclusion in the listings.
Traffic - the amount of visitors to your website. Often called site traffic.
Uk Domain - the extension found at the end of a website address that informs the visitor (& search engines) that the website is based in the UK. The most common are co.uk & org.uk.
Unsolicited Mail - often called Spam. Unrequested direct e-Mail marketing, often sent in high volumes. Can cause a problem for the recipient as recognising genuine e-Mails proves time consuming & costly.
Variation (Wallpaper) - once a piece of original artwork has been created for use as a wallpaper, a number of new pieces can be created based on this original. This increases the range of choice to site visitors & reduces the cost of a set of wallpapers.
Visitors - other people that choose to view pages on your website. Often called site visitors.
Wallpaper - downloaded or installed artwork to be displayed on a monitor or display screen. New desktop wallpaper replaces the default windows wallpaper & can be changed many times.
Web-Ad - full page advert with a unique name & e-Mail address. Used as a promotional tool. More visually appealing than the main website.
Webpage List - A listing of all the different pages that will go into your website project. A crucial first step in the planning of a site. By naming each one, the overall shape of the website begins to form.
Website Address - the address typed to view a particular website, for example www sharpplum co uk. Also called the domain name.
Webspace - the amount of space on a server that is reserved for storing site files for a particular website.
